The X-Men: Avengers Doomsday trailer plays like a bleak reminder of everything the MCU still hasn’t figured out post-Endgame.

Yes, it’s undeniably cool to see Cyclops finally get his due. Yes, the nostalgia hits hard. But beneath the surface, this trailer feels like recycled emotional beats we’ve already seen again and again: fractured teams, trauma, extinction threats, and mutants fighting to survive… again. And this time, it’s framed through an Avengers vs X-Men lens that feels hollow, rushed, and emotionally weightless.

The bigger problem? There’s no established status quo. Marvel still hasn’t clearly defined what the X-Men even are in this universe. Are they continuing the Deadpool & Wolverine meta-commentary about rejected heroes trying to prove their worth? That worked for a ragtag, discarded squad — but the Fox X-Men aren’t rejects. They’re iconic, beloved, and the only versions of these characters audiences know.

So what’s the actual conflict here?

Captain America fighting Wolverine means nothing without shared history. Cyclops clashing with Thor has no emotional grounding. Avengers vs X-Men without prior interaction isn’t tragedy — it’s spectacle without substance. The conflict exists for the audience, not for the characters living in this universe, and that’s the most frustrating part.
