How to Make Thread Covered Buttons: Beginner Passementerie Projects for Your Renaissance Costumes

I want to take a quick minute to welcome all of our new sewing companions who found my channel as part of #CoSy2021. Thank you for all of the kind feedback about my recent videos and please know I am still working on those subtitles for you. This week I pulled a video out that has been sitting in my editing pile of videos for a few weeks. Who is ready for another button making tutorial for their 16th and 17th century costumes?

Passementerie is the art of using embroidery materials and techniques to make highly decorated buttons and trimmings. There are dozens of styles of buttons you can make depending on the style but button mold you are using, materials, and purpose. This very simple style of thread wrapped button is a great style for beginners because it only uses a few different stitches, and focuses on technique over fancy stitching.

To make this project you will need:
Button Molds-- Mine are assorted wooden beads from a bulk bag at the craft store
Embroidery thread of your choice
Sharp embroidery needle
Scissors
Thimble
Needle puller (optional)

I first read about this technique in the hand finishing section of the Tudor Tailor almost 15 years ago. Another great book on this technique if you're interested is Buttons: A Passementerie Workshop Manual by Gina Barrett.
