How to use Windows PowerToys' PowerRename utility

If you've ever had to rename dozens, hundreds or even thousands of files for discovery, etc., you'll love this utility in Windows PowerToys called PowerRename. Here's how to use it to replace literal text, replace text or numbers that fit a pattern, add a prefix or suffix, or replace filenames entirely with either a file attribute like the file creation date or a completely random string of text and/or numbers.

Another reader alerted me to a paid alternative to PowerRename called Bulk Rename Utility that he says is even more powerful. If you or your firm do a lot of bulk file renaming, you might want to check out their website at bulkrenameutility.co.uk/
