Do you ever look at the person you’re with and just think, wow you should be a god and maybe also there should be a fandom devoted to you?
Well back in Ancient Times Roman Emperor Hadrian had those same feelings for his true love Antinous.
Only difference was he actually made it happen.
Hadrian was said to be unhappily married and disinterested in other women, but when he met the Bythinian peasant boy Antinous around the year 123, he immediately fell in love.
The two traveled the classical world together, from Athens to Alexandria but as they were sailing in harmony down the Nile, Antinous fell overboard and drowned under mysterious circumstances.
Hadrian was devastated so in October of the year 130 he deified his lover, transforming him into a god and announced a city to be built in commemoration of him called Antinoöpolis.
To round it all out, he also founded a cult to be devoted to Antinous as well.
While the deification of human beings did happen, it was usually reserved for Emperors, which makes Hadrian’s decision to turn his lover into a god, rather unorthodox.
