Birth and Early Life
Vinod Khanna was born on October 6, 1946, into a Punjabi family in Peshawar (now in Pakistan). His father, Kishan Chand Khanna, was a textile businessman, and his mother, Kamla Khanna, managed the household. After the Partition of India on August 14, 1947, the family had to leave their well-established business in Peshawar and move to Mumbai. Kishan Chand rebuilt his business and ensured his children received a quality education. Vinod Khanna's childhood in Mumbai's Bandra Hills was filled with activities like cricket, football, kite flying, and studies.
He completed his schooling at St. Mary’s School in Mumbai before moving to Delhi with his mother for further education at Delhi Public School. Later, he returned to Mumbai to attend the prestigious Barnes School in Nashik. Despite his shy nature during his school days, a teacher encouraged him to participate in a play to overcome his introversion. Initially hesitant, Vinod reluctantly performed but discovered a newfound passion for acting.

Early Interest in Cinema
Vinod Khanna's interest in cinema began to grow after watching films like Solva Saal and Mughal-e-Azam. He dreamed of entering the film industry but hesitated to share his aspirations with his father, who was strictly against the idea of a film career. In those days, a career in movies was often viewed with disdain. To honor his father’s wishes, Vinod focused on his studies and completed his graduation from Sydenham College in Mumbai.

First Break in Bollywood
During a college party, Vinod met the legendary actor and producer Sunil Dutt, who was then planning a film to launch his brother Som Dutt. Impressed by Vinod's personality, Sunil Dutt offered him a role in his film Man Ka Meet (1968), where Vinod debuted as a villain. Reluctantly, his father allowed him to pursue acting on the condition that he would return to the family business if his film career didn’t take off within two years.
Vinod Khanna's villainous role in Man Ka Meet was well-received, and soon he was cast in supporting roles in films like Purab Aur Paschim, Aan Milo Sajna, and Sacha Jhootha. His performance as a dacoit in Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971) opposite Dharmendra gained critical acclaim, and directors began to notice him.

Rise as a Leading Actor
Gulzar’s Mere Apne (1971) marked a turning point in Vinod Khanna’s career, where he played a memorable antagonist opposite Shatrughan Sinha. Although initially typecast as a villain, Gulzar saw the potential for a heroic image in Vinod and cast him as the lead in Achanak (1973). This film transformed his image and paved the way for him to become a lead actor.
Over time, Vinod Khanna established himself as a versatile actor who could excel in both villainous and heroic roles. Films like Parvarish, Amar Akbar Anthony, and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar saw him sharing screen space with Amitabh Bachchan, often holding his own and even outshining the superstar in certain scenes.

A Spiritual Quest
Despite his flourishing career, by the 1980s, Vinod Khanna felt a growing sense of emptiness. The death of his mother further deepened his quest for peace. He found solace in Osho's teachings and began spending weekends at the Osho ashram in Pune. Gradually, he withdrew from his film commitments and, in 1982, announced that he was taking a break from acting to join Osho in the United States.
This decision created a stir in the film industry and strained his relationship with his wife, Gitanjali, whom he had married in 1971. They had two young sons, Rahul and Akshaye. While he stayed in touch with his family over the phone, the distance took its toll, and Gitanjali eventually filed for divorce in 1985.
