Do Protestants believe in mortal sin?
Many Roman Catholic apologists claim that Sola Fide necessarily allows Christians to live in grievous sin without consequence. Others argue that Reformed and Lutheran theology denies the seriousness of mortal sin altogether. In this video, I demonstrate—through the Reformers themselves—that both the Lutheran and Reformed traditions affirmed a real category of mortal sin, rejected “cheap grace,” and upheld the necessity of good works for the Christian life.
We examine the Roman Catholic distinction between mortal and venial sin, the Calvinist doctrine of demeritorious guilt (Turretin, Zanchi), and the Lutheran doctrine of falling from grace (Formula of Concord). Finally, we show precisely where Protestants differ from Rome on the nature of justification, charity, faith, and the consequences of sin.
This is a theological analysis designed to clear up repeated misconceptions about Protestant soteriology, perseverance, and the historic position of the Reformers.
