In 1986, Spandau Ballet released the album Through The Barricades and also issued the title track of the same name. A haunting and moving ballad that I immediately liked and is still one of my favourite songs to this day. When I heard it I immediately attributed the song to the situation in Belfast. Gary Kemp, the guitarist and song writer of Spandau, stated in an interview that the song was inspired by a friend of theirs who was shot dead in Belfast in 1983.
On my latest visit to Belfast in December 2013, we took a drive around areas in Belfast and saw some of the walls and barriers that are in place. A truly eerie experience. In editing the footage I added this music to enhance the video. Indeed, the music makes the video and the video makes the music!
Of course there is more to Belfast that this video doesn't capture and in time I hope to show more of this beautiful city.
