The /w/ sound is a voiced consonant also known as an approximant which is formed by rounding the lips.
The /w/ sound appears is words such as:
wet
winter
wonder
wales
The /w/ sound is also used as a glide vowel or a silent semi-vowel allowing us to transition between a specific set of vowel sounds more seamlessly. In this case, this specific set of sounds is the transition from the near-back vowel sound /ʊ/ or the back vowel sound /uː/ to other vowel sounds.
