Abd al-Malik bin Quraib Asma’i (740–828 CE) was one of the most brilliant minds of the Abbasid era—celebrated as a founder of zoology, an expert in Arabic language and philosophy, and a preserver of ancient Arabic poetry. Born in Basra, Asma’i studied under great scholars like Khalil bin Ahmad Farahidi and Abu Amr bin Al-Ala.
He authored groundbreaking works on horses, camels, wild animals, human anatomy, and much more, including:
Kitab al-Khail (On Horses)
Kitab al-Ibil (On Camels)
Kitab al-Wuhush (On Wild Animals)
Khalaq al-Insan (On Human Anatomy – the first of its kind)
From teaching the sons of Caliph Harun al-Rashid to honoring a humble vegetable seller, Asma’i’s life is a testament to knowledge, humility, and legacy.
