Wrestle War (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Sega's 1991 wrestling game for the Sega Mega Drive, Wrestle War.

Played through on the default difficulty level.

I really wish that this game had come out in the states when the Genesis was in its prime, but it was a Japan and UK only release until it got a 1995 Australian release, and finally a 2001 American release through the Sega Smash Pack for the Dreamcast. That version sucked.

This is a thoroughly awesome game. Its play is surprisingly similar to the first two WWF games on the NES, but it looks fantastic. The animation is a bit choppy, but this is super impressive for 1991, much the same way that the 1987/89 PCE/Turbo game China Warrior was amazing for its huge sprites when it was released.

I love how obvious it is that the wrestlers are real life stars with different names because of the lack of a license. It makes me think that after they'd gone this far, what difference would it make to just use their actual likenesses outright?

Anyway, it's pure 80s arcade button mashing goodness. If that's your thing, this is a good one to track down.

Oh, and the cover of the Japanese game is a hysterically over dramatic portrait of Not-Hulk Hogan that looks exactly like Hulk Hogan. You should look it up. It's awesome.
