Roches Noires Caves Trail Mauritius which includes a museum and a tree nursery is situated over 5 acres of land, the trail was inaugurated on 17th December 2015, by Prime Minister, Sir Anerood Jugnauth. Roches Noires Caves Trail is a valuable asset to Mauritius's natural heritage and will help us better understand the island's geology. The introduction of the cave symbolises yet another new way to discover Mauritius. The new museum, which was previously a deserted building, is there to help raise awareness about the ecological importance of the caves.

A hiking trail some 500 metres long has been created at Roches Noires Caves. Invasive plant species have all been removed from the trail and thousands of endemic trees and plants have been added, all this has been done whilst still keeping the natural character of the place. It is hoped that the trail will help to promote eco-tourism in Mauritius and allow the study of caves. Roches Noires is a coastal village in the district of Riviere du Rempart, Mauritius, mainly known for its various caves and wetlands areas. A narrow bridge which is the start of the trail gives you a stunning view over the river.

You can take a trail to see either 2 or 6 caves. The Mauritian fruit bats and swallows live in these cool, dark caves. If you are claustrophobic it is best to avoid going in them. Most caves are spacious and only a few were narrow.
