In the opening match of the New Year's 4 Nations Cup 2025 Tournament at the ORLEN Arena in Płock, the Japanese national team – runners-up of Asia in 2024 – faced the third African team, Tunisia. Both teams – like the Poles – are preparing to participate in the 2025 World Cup.
During the first half, the Japanese team gained a three-goal advantage, opening the scoring. The vice-champions of Asia were leading and setting the tone for the entire first set, and at one point the gap was even four goals (10:6). In the second half, Tunisia played much better and even managed to score a goal. Japan reacted well to the opponents' offensive and did not let themselves be broken, but the match went in a goal-for-goal rhythm until the end of the match. After a thrilling end, Japan defended the minimal advantage and won 34:33. Naoki Sugioka, the author of seven goals, was awarded the title of MVP of the match.
