This song was created as a platform of expression for a small community that had been struck with multiple suicides in a very short period of time. I asked them what they wanted to say and they spoke about not being allowed to speak about suicide in their school, in accordance to MoE laws, so I took them to the marae and we talked there.
Each part is a different perspective - the first, 2 whakatauki, the second, a voice of grief of a close relative, the third, a call from taiohi to their whanau leaders/carers, and the last is a challenge to our governance/community leaders.
The mauri of life is in the breath, and through my Uncle's teaching I learned in order to move forward from traumatic hurt, one must pause/stop what they are doing, let go of that breath and inhale a renewed connection to life. Okioki, Tukua, Kotuituia...
