K is for Karl - Alienation (Episode 1)

Im ersten Film der Serie von fünf, sucht der britische Filmemacher und Journalist Paul Mason in Berlin, wo Marx 1836 zu studieren begann, nach den Wurzeln von Karl Marx Denken. «Für Marx hieß Entfremdung nicht nur, es geht uns schlechter, wir hassen unsere Arbeit und sehen eine schlechte Entwicklung der Welt. Es bedeutet, dass wir unsere kreative Kraft ständig in eine falsche Richtung lenken. Wir produzieren Dinge, aber die Dinge, die wir machen – Maschinen, Staaten, Religionen, Regeln – werden uns am Ende kontrollieren.

«Warum ist Marx heute noch wichtig?» fragt der britische Journalist und Filmemacher Paul Mason in den fünf kurzen Filmen, die er für Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung anlässlich des 200jährigen Marx Jubiläums produziert hat. Entfremdung, Kommunismus, Revolution, Ausbeutung und die Zukunft mit Maschinen sind die Themen, die Mason bearbeitet um zu zeigen warum Marx, den Mason als den einflussreichsten Denker der modernen Welt bezeichnet, heute aktueller ist denn je.

In the first of a series of five short films, British journalist and filmmaker Paul Mason searches for the roots of Marx’s thinking in Berlin, where he began his university studies in 1836. “For Marx, alienation doesn’t just mean we get depressed, we hate our jobs, or that we feel bad about the world. It means we’re constantly using our creative powers in the wrong way. We make things, but the things we make – machines, states, religions, rules – end up controlling us.”

“Why does Marx matter today?” is the question posed by British journalist and filmmaker Paul Mason in five short films produced by the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung to commemorate Karl Marx’s 200th birthday. Through Marx, Mason explores the topics of “Alienation”, “Communism”, “Revolution”, “Exploitation” and “The Future of Machines” in order to demonstrate how Marx, who Mason describes as the most influential thinker of the modern world, remains deeply relevant to understanding our contemporary world.
