Another great resource for looking at difficult verses that seem to convey a message contrary to the scope of scripture is the Revised English Version (REV) Commentary. Here is a great example:

“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:8 KJB

This verse is commonly used to support the teaching that the “soul” goes straight to heaven after death, leaving the body behind on Earth.
