Part two: How Do These Powers Work Again?

I awake in my own bed.

It is strange when dreams are like that, seemingly more vivid than life itself.

It takes me a few moments to realize that I’ve fallen asleep in my clothes. It takes a few moments more to realize that they still smell of surf and sand.

I shower and change into fresh clothes. I take my time over my morning routine, in no hurry to start the day and return to work.

Finally, I sit at my desk and open my computer. I navigate to my thesis proposal.

Questions unrelated to my thesis linger at the edge of my mind as I type.

Was it real? If it was, how did I do it? Could I do it again?

There are two things that I know for sure. The first is that I must at least try. The second is that I cannot risk ending up back in Themyscira. It is clear enough that as a non-Amazon, as a non-warrior, I am not welcome there.

At least, not yet.

I try to think of another place I can visit. I want to be a hero. A heroine. I want to know that I can save the world - just in case it ever needs to be saved. By me.

Where can I learn to be a heroine, undetected as a stranger to the world I’m visiting?

By the time I power off my laptop in the late afternoon, I have already made my choice.

I close my eyes and fill my mind with the steady rush of a nearby falls. Would I feel the steady pulse of the Moonstone leaching power from the Heart of the planet? Would it sound like a bright, twinkling glow? Would I be able to feel its magic, having been raised on another world?

I open my eyes to a starless night sky bathed in the light of moons. I’m standing on a turret. I only have to look down to see the Moonstone and its gently pulsing light. I can hear voices conversing softly on a parapet below.

I duck behind a potted plant to avoid being spotted by a pair of guards passing by.

Suddenly it occurs to me that I really ought to rethink my plan. I can’t just walk up to Adora and ask to join the Rebellion. How am I supposed to explain who I am or where I come from?

I have to do some research first. Maybe visit some other places on Etheria. Come up with a plausible cover story. Practice a bit with some tech and weapons. Advance a belt or two in taekwondo.

I remember all too well Azoria’s disappointment that I wasn’t the hero she had been expecting to wash up on her shores.

This time will be different. I’ll be better prepared. More convincing as a potential heroine. Maybe even useful.

I smile.

I have a plan.
