Armenia hasn’t taken part in CSTO meetings for two years, signaling deep frustration with Moscow’s inaction during the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis. Russian peacekeepers were expected to protect Armenians, yet they stood by as Azerbaijan regained control and the Lachin Corridor remained blocked.
Feeling abandoned, many Armenians are now looking West — strengthening ties with Europe and even considering future EU membership. Still, Russia maintains troops and influence in Armenia, making a full break difficult. Lukashenko’s recent mocking remarks, Diana Skaya says, show Moscow’s irritation as it loses ground in the Southern Caucasus.
Armenia is also exploring new trade routes, including the so-called “Trump Route,” in hopes of securing stability and regional connectivity. With the 2026 elections ahead, the country is divided: some blame Prime Minister Pashinyan for the losses, others praise him for finally standing up to Russia.
