Amarbayasgalant Monastery is one of Mongolia’s most well-preserved and significant Buddhist monasteries. Located in the Selenge Province, northern Mongolia, it is known for its beautiful architecture, historical importance, and serene surroundings.
Amarbayasgalant Monastery was built between 1727 and 1736 during the reign of the Manchu emperor Yongzheng. It was dedicated to the great Mongolian religious leader, Zanabazar, the first Bogd (spiritual head of Mongolian Buddhism), as a place to house his remains.
The monastery is one of the three largest Buddhist centers in Mongolia and is regarded as one of the most sacred. It was a center for Buddhist teachings, philosophy, and art during its peak.
Unlike many other monasteries in Mongolia, Amarbayasgalant survived relatively intact during the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, although many monks were executed, and its treasures were looted.
The architecture of Amarbayasgalant reflects Tibetan, Chinese, and Mongolian styles, harmoniously blended. It follows a symmetrical layout, with the main temple complex and other structures organized in a straight line from south to north.
Originally, there were over 40 temples within the complex, but today, around 28 temples remain.
The monastery is renowned for its wooden carvings, intricate roof designs, and the majestic atmosphere created by the surrounding nature.
