How to get into the British Columbia Foraging for Morel Mushrooms in last years Wildfire areas. It may seem a daunting challenge, but with a little bit of time investment, you can get in on the harvest.
You will need to keep track of fire locations near you from the year before or search databases online to find where they were. Then you should check out Google maps and look for treed south exposure slopes because they are usually the first to warm up first and produce first.
I like finding valleys and areas without severe burn. partially living trees or edges of burns with needles on the ground are usually best as the morels will be cleaner. You can find them in the scorched earth areas, but I find they're much more likely to be dirty and impossible to get the grit off without washing.
Next fill up the tank and hit the road. Go out early and give yourself the most time you can. Locating them can take a bit of time, but once you pattern them usually you just keep finding more and more.
picking them out of the brown ground and pine cones takes a bit of time. so let your eyes become trained, and all of a sudden, they will pop out off the forest floor for you. Then you will see them everywhere!
Best way to figure it out is to just get out there and cover ground and stop to scan every few steps.
Good luck out there.
Stay Safe!
God Bless your Foraging!
