This Skoll World Forum 2016 session featured women in leadership. Panelists, from Left to Right, were: Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson; Sisters Capital CEO Halla Tomasdottir; Founding President of the Voice of Libyan Women Alaa Murabit; and the Rev. Mpho Tutu. The moderator was Pat Mitchell.
Some highlights from the conversation:
"We may not know how to give space, but we can validate. The experience that young men have is being validated. Young women, their idea is pushed off the table without consideration." --Mpho Tutu
"Women have a bigger definition of success—it's not just about making money, but about giving back. We are missing out by not having more women manage money." --Halla Tomasdottir
"Front line human rights defenders give me courage." -- Mary Robinson
"Courage comes from home, your upbringing, and knowing your environment shapes you. You need to have something at home that grounds you. It starts with who raises you and what they teach us." --Alaa Murabit
This session covered how from the statehouse to the boardroom, women have been excluded from leadership roles globally. Yet female leadership is tied to positive outcomes in profits, business ethics, peace, and the public good. The panelists discussed those taboos, and data both positive and inconclusive.
