Buck Dharma's extended live solo in VETERAN of the PSYCHIC WARS from 1981 is legendary, but that it for another day. This is my take on the studio version of this fine BLUE OYSTER CULT song from 1981's FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN.
As ever, this is just how I would play it, I make no claim that this is how Buck plays it.
Thanks as ever for watching

Blue Öyster Cult (BÖC) is an influential American hard rock and heavy metal band from Long Island, New York, known for their fusion of music with cryptic, literary-inspired lyrics and a distinctive, mysterious image. They have enjoyed both critical acclaim and mainstream success with classic rock staples such as "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," "Godzilla," and "Burnin' for You".
Band History
Formed in 1967 at Stony Brook University under the name Soft White Underbelly, the band went through several lineup changes and names before settling on Blue Öyster Cult in 1971. Their classic and most commercially successful lineup featured:
Eric Bloom (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards)
Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (lead guitar, vocals)
Allen Lanier (keyboards, rhythm guitar)
Joe Bouchard (bass, vocals)
Albert Bouchard (drums, vocals)
The band's early "black and white years" featured three albums with dark, monochromatic covers and a heavy, psychedelic sound. Their 1976 album, Agents of Fortune, which included their massive hit "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", launched them into superstar status and commercial success.
Musical Style and Lyrics
BÖC is known as "the thinking man's heavy metal band" due to their sophisticated and often obscure lyrical content. They frequently collaborated with outside lyricists, including rock critics Sandy Pearlman (their long-time manager) and Richard Meltzer, and science fiction/horror authors such as Patti Smith, Michael Moorcock, and John Shirley. Their lyrics often explore themes of the occult, science fiction, and mythology.
The band's iconic hook-and-cross logo is the alchemical symbol for lead and the astrological symbol for Saturn/Kronos, the Greek god associated with the harvest and the origin of the Grim Reaper figure, adding to their mystique.
Legacy and Current Status
Blue Öyster Cult has been cited as a major influence on numerous hard rock and heavy metal acts, including Metallica and Iron Maiden. They were also early adopters of the music video format and pioneered the use of lasers in their live shows.
Donald Brian Roeser, known professionally as Buck Dharma, is the celebrated lead guitarist, vocalist, and primary songwriter for the hard rock band Blue Öyster Cult. As the sole constant member since the band's formation in 1967, he is a cornerstone of their unique sound and legacy.
Key Contributions and Style
Buck Dharma is best known for writing and singing lead vocals on many of BÖC's most enduring hits, including:
"(Don't Fear) The Reaper": The band's signature song, which he wrote while contemplating his own mortality after a health scare.
"Godzilla": A heavy rock staple.
"Burnin' for You": Another major chart success that received heavy rotation on early MTV.
Dharma's guitar style is highly regarded for its distinctive, melodic, and atmospheric quality, blending elements of classic blues, jazz, and early rock with heavy metal power. His solos are known for being tasteful and serving the song rather than simply showcasing speed, a quality that has made him an influential but often "underrated" figure in rock history.
Career and Legacy
Born in New York City in 1947, Roeser came from a musical family (his father was a jazz saxophonist) and took up guitar after a basketball injury ended his brief stint as a drummer. He met future bandmates at college and, at the suggestion of their manager and producer Sandy Pearlman, adopted the stage name "Buck Dharma".
Beyond his work with Blue Öyster Cult, he has released one solo album, Flat Out (1982), which contained songs he felt were too "poppy" for the band's main output. He continues to tour extensively with the current Blue Öyster Cult lineup and released new music as recently as July 2024.
