From Miami to West Palm Beach, the Atlantic coast has grown into one continuous urban expanse where cities blend seamlessly along the water. What began as scattered beach towns has fused into a single metropolitan corridor shaped by the Intracoastal Waterway and decades of coastal engineering.
Developers reshaped the coastline by dredging canals, carving inlets, and creating artificial islands to maximize valuable waterfront property. Mangroves and swamps were drained to build neighborhoods with private docks and ocean access. The Intracoastal became both a transportation route and a framework for urban design, turning South Florida into a vast grid of waterways, bridges, and resort-lined shores.
Today, from Miami’s skyline to Fort Lauderdale’s marinas and Palm Beach’s estates, the region forms one of the most densely developed coastlines in the United States. It is a mega city built on sand and ambition, where nature and design merge in a landscape engineered for luxury and light.
