The plot line is this...
When Spock Prime gives Kirk a mind meld in this new universe to explain what happened to the Romulans, he doesn't just give information about the Romulans. Some of his own memories get mixed up in all the confusion as their minds meld into one. And Kirk sees that Spock gives his own life to fi the warp core and save the ship. Every day since the meld, Kirk is tormented by Spock Prime's memories, having to re-live Spock's death many times. But then, when the time comes, and the warp core malfunctions, Kirk knows now what he has to do... And how he has to save his friend from dying the same way.
