Czech composer Alois Haba explored microtonality intensively in a large part of his output, of which much remains yet to be heard.
I chose this short movement to make a rendition as accurate as possible (midi + commercially available samples) that could best illustrate the piece's charming and clear harmonic structures.
The first version approaches just-intonation through the correction of a few intervals -- in this case basically: 7/4= +20 cents and 5/4=-15 cents; the minor third can be thought of as either 19/16 (nearly just in 12 and 24) or 6/5, then to be corrected +15 cents.
In this rendition I chose to use 6/5 in bar 2 and 19/16 in bars 4 and 6.
The notation here is neither the one used by Hába or the most commonly used notation derived from Tartini (both of which I find have readability problems), it is instead a standard which seems to me the most logical and readable: quarter-tone alterations are very simply indicated by an arrow-head in the corresponding direction, so there are actually no new alteration-signs other than those, which are quite intuitive, visually effective (also from a distance or in small size) and unambiguously readable.
Enjoy - and thanks for listening!
