Benin’s National Assembly has approved a significant constitutional amendment extending the presidential term from 5 to 7 years while maintaining the 2-term limit, sparking debate across the region. The reform—passed with 90 votes in favour and 19 against—also establishes a new Senate whose members will include presidential appointees and former presidents, raising concerns about elite entrenchment and weakened checks on power. With President Patrice Talon set to leave office next April and Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni widely seen as his preferred successor, questions are emerging about the future of Benin’s democracy. Joining the conversation is Godwin Toko, Deputy Team Leader at the Agora Centre for Research. Watch the whole discussion.
