Silver Pompano (Chanduva) Fish Farming Success in Andhra Pradesh!
Silver Pompano aquaculture in coastal aqua ponds has shown remarkable success, offering farmers high profitability and strong domestic and international market demand. According to Fisheries Department Deputy Director L. L. N. Raju, this marine species is becoming a game-changer for coastal farmers.
Experimental farming conducted by CMFRI (Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute) and the Fisheries Department in the coastal regions of Srikakulam and Nellore has produced excellent results. With this success, the government has officially approved Silver Pompano cultivation in saline coastal fields. Hatcheries have started producing high-quality fingerlings, and farmers in Achanta and Dondapindi (Bhimavaram) are already seeing positive outcomes.
Silver Pompano thrives in saline soils and coastal brackish waters, tolerating moderate temperatures.
✅ Ideal salinity: 5–25 ppm
✅ pH range: 7.5–8.3
✅ Dissolved oxygen: Above 4 mg/l
Continuous aeration is essential to maintain healthy conditions.
Farmers can stock 3,000–4,000 fingerlings per acre, each measuring 1–2 inches. As carnivorous fish, they require floating feed with 40–50% protein. In 6–8 months, they grow to 400–800 grams, providing a yield of 4–5 tonnes per hectare. Exporters are offering ₹400–₹450 per kg, making this a highly profitable aquaculture venture.
