Mayor Fiorello La Guardia throws out the first ball at the Polo Grounds as the Dodgers and Giants battled it out in front of 56,000 fans, including retired Yankees slugger Babe Ruth. The Giants would trounce the Dodgers 8-5 that day, a bad omen for the Bums of Flatbush who would finish the year in seventh place, while the Giants went on to win the National League Pennant.
