This episode we travel from Italy through France to get the ferry back to England. Our journey took us to Borghetto Santo Spirito on the Italian riviera at a sosta called Val Varatella. We parked up, made sure the beer was chilling and set out the food parcel that Marjorie and Gino had sent us off with.
The next day the weather turned, it was blowing a hoolie. We settled in for the morning, mainly eating and editing. Later on I the afternoon we walked through the centro historic and down to the beach. They had prepared for a storm as they had created sand banks all along the front. We tried to find a café open but none of them appeared to be welcoming us in so we fought our way back through the wind. The following morning we went to the paneficio for bread. We have noticed that over here they often cut the loaf in half and we have seen some customers ask for just that. After our breakie we prepared to leave. So just like that our Italian venture is ending and our journey back through France starts.
Our first night back in France was in Aix en Provence We walked into town to get to a cash point and searched for a Boulangerie. A lot of French banks charge around €6-€7 to access your money and after 3 attempts we found a bank that didn’t charge.
Next morning we headed north and stopped at some services. The closest one had a KFC. Temptation got the better of both of us, but it was just warm and lacked any flavour.
Our next stay was Belleville-en-Beujollais, we had noisy neighbours. We didn’t venture out that evening and woke up early to the sound of a radio. We went to the boulangerie for pastries.
We headed off towards our next aire at Epineuil. After parking we went in search of the boulangerie(again!!). This one was definitely not one to miss. We bought a tarte cerise and a lemon meringue plus a baguettes. We got a token for the services at the aire and did not have to pay extra for water or to empty the loo. :) This was a great stop over.
Next morning was washing day. We went to Leclerc en route for the revolution laundry. We choose the largest machine as everything goes in one wash. We did our shopping then made lunch whilst we got our washing and drying done. We love the salads that you can get in French supermarkets.
We headed off and ended up at a small site in La Cheppe right by a Celtic settlement. A site where the Gauls fought the hun. It is called Camp d’Atilla. Rob and I got out and walked the walls and got very muddy. Rob kindly got all the mud off my boots when we got back to Jurgen. Some men bring you flowers to show they care, Rob cleans your boots! I know which I preferred today.
Next day we drove to Richebourg which is about one hours drive away from Dunkirk, our departure port. The rain battered down all night. It didn’t let up so we had a lazy start to the day.
We got up early 6.30am to get ready for the trip to the ferry. We had planned to move even closer to Dunkirk yesterday but rain stopped play/travel. I called in at the boulangerie for our last pastry breakfast for a while and the women serving had a new till. This situation was causing her a great deal of anxiety. It took about 20 mins for her to serve the woman before me then the same for me. I hope her day gets better.
The sunrise this morning was particularly beautiful and the mist over the fields of Flanders was evocative of a time not so very long ago where young men like my grandad put their lives on the line for our freedom. We got to Dunkirk early and boarded the ferry without a fuss and we sat at a table in the café, surrounded by coach loads of German schoolchildren.
So this is the last of our French/Italian adventure. We are a little sad, but happy to see friends and family again also realise how blessed we are to have the freedom to go out exploring. We have seen places so rich in history and culture it is almost too much to take in. We need to return to spend more time and fully immerse ourselves in the history, art and culture. We also need to return to eat french pastries and Italian pizza.
