Sewerby lies in a picturesque position overlooking a sweeping, sandy bay - this is the meeting place of Flamborough's stark white cliffs and the sands of Bridlington. It is an old village with a fascinating history stretching back to the time of the Doomsday Book in which it is mentioned.
The village has pleasant streets of terraced houses amongst which there are some noted buildings from the 19th-century. The handsome old school is now a home for the elderly and Sewerby Grange, the former vicarage is now an attractive hotel which has retained many original features. The church of St.John the Evangelist was built in 1847 in Transition Norman style at the expense of the Graeme family who lived at Serwerby Hall and The Ship Inn originally built in 1823, sits in a commanding position overlooking the bay. The Ship has kept much of its bygone atmosphere and is a friendly place for a drink and a tasty bite to eat.
Apart from the beach, the towns' most popular attraction is majestic Sewerby Hall, home to the Graeme family for over two centuries. The house, in all its perfection, sits on the cliffs surrounded by 50 acres of tranquil, landscaped grounds. Here, there is something for every member of the family; there are interesting visiting exhibitions, a children's zoo, peaceful rose gardens, craft shop, pitch and putt. A summer feature is Medieval Jousting, where Knights vie for the favour of my fair lady, it is a great spectacle, lots of merriment and fun for everyone. The Hall commemorates the life and times of aviator Amy Johnson, Yorkshires great heroine of the skies.
Surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches in Yorkshire, Sewerby makes an ideal location from which to explore the hidden treasures of the glorious East Yorkshire coast.
