Job interviews are STRESSFUL.
The palpitations
Tension in the shoulders and jaw
Excessive sweating
Dry mouth
Upset stomach
You get the shakes
Maybe even that blotchy redness that spreads across your neck
It's stressful because you're being evaluated. You're being judged, and often based on things like your demeanor, or voice, or appearance or apparent levels of confidence, most of which AREN'T good indicators of whether you can do the job.
HOW are you supposed to be your BEST SELF in this situation?
And what do these people want from us anyway? Like, really - what do they want? It'd be good to know, right?
Well, I've interviewed hundreds of people for our digital marketing agency. I AM one of those people. So I thought, why don't I just tell you? So here you go...
Remember to practice the scripts OUT LOUD if you can.
Scripts:
Q1: Tell me about yourself
Answer:
My name is...
I grew up in...
I went to school/college...
I worked as a...
My interest in the field developed when...
...and that's what brings me here today
Outside of work I like to... [hobbies]
My interesting fact/funny thing about me is…
You might want to build on/cut some of the above to make it fit your circumstances, and make sure it feels natural when you say it out loud. Make tweaks if you need to.
Q2. What's your biggest weakness
Answer:
This is where you talk about a neutral personality trait, talk about the downsides of that trait and how that poses a challenge. Then talk about how you've overcome that challenge to maximise the upsides of that trait. E.g. you're an introvert/extrovert.
I am/have... [personality trait]
This means I have a natural tendency to...
I've overcome this by...
This means that now... [there's a huge benefit]
Tips:
Making yourself feel comfortable
You can make yourself feel more confident by making yourself feel more comfortable.
How? Breathing and relaxation.
Breathe in for the count of 4, then take another short, sharp inward breath to fit a bit more in your lungs.
Then breathe out for the count of 8.
Even in the interview, you can just focus on deeper, slower breathing to help you relax.
Make your muscles go floppy. Relax all the muscles in your face, jaw, neck, shoulders.
Shake it all out.
Release the tension.
Body Language
The top half of your body will be most important if you're sitting down.
Practice smizing (smiling with only your eyes). Hat tip to Tyra Banks. This will help communicate warmth.
Mirror body language. This will help you establish rapport.
Posture - keep your chin up, lean forwards towards someone when they're talking to you. Turn your body as much as you can to face someone when you're conversing with them.
Avoid Defensiveness
Defensiveness is a massive red flag for me. Be open-minded to the fact that you may be wrong and/or there may not be a right answer (it could be subjective). Learn from the interview - it could help you in a subsequent interview.
If you don't know the answer to a question, try to work it out. Think out loud so you can get credit for your thought process.
Avoid saying "sorry" if you don't know something, or if you think the interview is going badly. It will be going much better than you think! This is an opportunity to learn and get practice.
Do more research
I'm currently creating videos on the following topics - check my channel (maybe.... subscribe?!) for updates:
How to get a job in digital marketing with no experience in 2024
How to become a digital marketing expert in record time
How to develop a digital marketing strategy
How to deal with awkward client questions (great if you're new to the agency world and are about to meet your first client!)
Reply in the comments if there's a specific question/request you have - I'll do my best to reply and might even do a video on the topic.
Would you like to work for me, or one of my agency-owning friends? Let me know :)
You've totally got this - GO SMASH IT!!!!!
