Red or Long Rods - Sensorial - Montessori

PRESENTATION

• Spread the mat on the floor and help your child to carry the rods to the mat.
• Place the rods in random order on the mat and parallel to each other.
• You will be showing your child how to judge the lengths of the rods by sight and touch.
• Using your first two fingers of your dominant hand feel the entire length of the larger rods from one end to the other.
• Select the longest rod by sight and touch and place the longest rod at the top of the mat. Select the next longest rod by touch and sight and place it next to the other rod making sire the left ends are even.
• Keep selecting the rods in order of length with even ends on the left. If the child understands the exercise and wants to join in let them, they can even do it on their own.
• When the child is working well with the rods show him how the smallest rod can fit into each end of the rods. This activity helps the child to further understand the study of size.
• The size varies only along one dimension. The child is learning to judge by touch and sight, it helps them to be aware of length in the environment
