Rolled hems come with benefits: they are suited for beginners, discrete and a great pretext for transforming for functional stitches into beautiful, intricate needle lace ornaments. Although they were used all over Romania until 19th century they were replaced by the flat hems, featured into embroidery books printed in Western Europe. In the Danube Valley and Dobrogea region we find the same style practiced in Greece and Asia Minor.
