Part 3 of the Ratty build, strip and clean the engine. Inside the engine case looked really clean, and the bearings had no play in them, as far as I could tell so the bottom end is going to be left alone. I filed off some of the rough castings around the inlet and exhaust ports, bore looked good, as did the head. The roller weight caps had completely broken up and the ramps in the variator were badly worn. I had already replaced the variator on my Red Ped, so as this is a budget build, the decision was to use that 'Red Ped' variator and weights on Ratty. Once I know the engine is good I will probably buy another Polini variator for Ratty. Clutch and Starter clutched were cleaned and looked ok, although I may buy some polini clutch springs once I know, once again, that the engine is good.
