“Why U So Like Dat?”, “It’s Okay Lah” and “Fried Rice Paradise” - these songs by Siva Choy And The Kopi Kat Klan, the Wah Lau Gang and Dick Lee ruled Singapore’s English-language radio airwaves in the early 1990s.
They were peppered with Singlish, the use of which was frowned upon by the government at the time as it was concerned that poor English would affect Singapore’s image on the international stage.
The Wah Lau Gang sold 10,000 copies of their first album, Wah Lau, Cannot Like That Wan Meh?” in 1992 - when local bands’ album sales typically hovered in the hundreds.
