This is the oldest church in the inner city, as it was built in 1219. It was closed for renovation and restoration from 2010-2019 and the nave where these photos are taken is still closed. The nave contains a hanging vault (early 1500s) that needs major work as well as painting on the ceiling that dates from the construction of the nave in the 1500s. 2 different portals are seen, the Jakob Portal for pilgrims walking to Santiago di Compostela and the Jerusalem Portal for pilgrims walking there. Both portals date to 1219.
The church suffered very little damage in WW2, so there is a lot of original artwork and construction here that has to be handled very carefully.
The 2 archeologists who have been working on the church for many years did a fantastic job of explaining all the many details about the work being done here and how excited the crew is to work on this gem of Frankfurt.
The tour was only available for "Day of the Open Monument" held in Sept. every year. I have been lucky enough to go on a tour here on at least 6 of the years it has been closed.
St. Leonhard is open 6 days a week, on weekdays from 1500-1900 and on weekends from 11-1800. Services are in German and English.
