Event: The role of the judiciary in the UK Constitution

The judiciary perform an important role in the UK constitution. Yet this role is often misunderstood. The judiciary has also been criticised for ‘straying into politics’. These criticisms came to the fore in public debate over decisions relating to Brexit – particularly in the two Miller decisions.
In this Constitutional Law Matters event, the panel discussed these issues, looking at both the legal and the political context of this debate. Did the judiciary go too far? Or should the judiciary go further to provide an effective check over the administration?
The event was chaired by Professor Kate O’Regan (University of Oxford). Panelists included Lady Hale (former President of the UK Supreme Court), Professor Alison Young (University of Cambridge) and Professor Anand Menon (King’s College London).
