I first meet Rene a few years ago at a board game convention and we quickly hit it off through our love of game books. His enthusiasm for the Lone Wolf books by Joe Dever was massively apparent.

I must admit, these series of game books passed me by when they were first published way back in 1984. Not quite sure I missed them as they’ve gone on to sell over 9 million copies worldwide!

What’s the game all about?
Lone Wolf AR – “Choose Your Own” Fantasy Adventures in the Real World brings high-fantasy role-playing into the real world and lets you be the hero of your own adventure in your neighborhood.

Building on the heritage of the 29 Lone Wolf ‘Choose Your Own Path’ books written by Joe Dever, his son Ben and VisionizAR are using the latest Augmented Reality (AR) and location technology so you can get up off the sofa and walk in the real world to decide the outcome of each encounter, defeat monsters and gather treasure for your Homestead.

• Discover adventure on your doorstep and choose your own path
• See and fight Monsters in Augmented Reality (AR) Mode
• Collaborate with other players to overcome epic ‘Boss’ enemies
• Fight for your faction and protect your territory

This game builds on other location-based experiences like Pokemon Go and Jurassic World Alive so players can find missions and encounters; then we add stories of high adventure and a ‘choose your path’ style of play to bring you a true sense of adventure.

It wasn’t until a Bottled Imp fan asked if I’d be reviewing them that I discovered this vast and varied game book series. To date twenty-nine titles have been published spanning a thirty-two year time. The total series run will be 32 books with Joe’s son, Ben, finishing the last few books based on Joe’s detailed notes.

The Bottled Imp had the privilege to interview Joe at the UK Games Expo in 2016 in June, and we found him to be gentleman, passionate about fantasy and writing. Joe sadly passed away in November that year. We feel very blessed to have met him, albeit, for a brief moment.

‘Flight from the Dark’ sets up this game book series. You are Lone Wolf. In a devastating attack the Darklords have destroyed the monastery where you were learning the skills of the Kai Lords. You are the sole survivor and have sworn revenge.
