Music has helped define black culture and history in America, both religiously and politically. Slaves, forbidden to speak their own languages or learn to read, created spirituals. The songs were used to uplift spirits, communicate information and as a form of protest. The Winston-Salem State University Burke Singers, under the direction of Maestra D’Walla Simmons-Burke, showcase that history and tradition in these two songs, "Ballad of the Sit-Ins" and "The Women Gather."
