High phosphorus is very harmful. As kidney disease progresses, its ability to excrete phosphorus declines, raising blood phosphorus levels. High phosphorus levels lead to calcification of blood vessels and heart valves, bone resorption, and increased fracture risk—in short, a whole metabolic axis is disrupted.

Historically, the approach to dealing with high phosphorus was to impose blanket dietary restrictions. However, new research discourages such practices and recommends a more nuanced nutritional adjustment.
