When Skating Stopped Being Cool | The 90s Decline of Skateboarding

This is a follow-up to my previous video, When Skateboarding Was Cool. Because to some, it was never cool, and to others, it’s always been cool. In today’s video, we explore how skateboarding’s mainstream popularity crashed in the early ’90s and what that meant for the skaters, the brands, and the culture.

By the end of the ’80s, skateboarding was everywhere—MTV, Hollywood, video games, and huge contests. But by the early ’90s, the boom was over. Pro skaters who once made tens of thousands a month were suddenly scraping by, brands like Vision and Powell Peralta struggled to stay afloat, and skating all but disappeared from the mainstream. But underground? It wasn’t just surviving—it was evolving.

This video dives into the rise of World Industries, Blind, and other skater-run brands that flipped the industry upside-down. We’ll look at how skate videos like Video Days and Questionable reshaped skateboarding, how street skating found its true identity, and how skating's DIY culture thrived even when it was considered "uncool."

And of course, we’ll talk about big pants, tiny wheels, chain wallets, and all the other defining parts of early '90s skate culture.
