Ever wonder what the violin sounded like in the 1800’s? Well, here’s your chance to hear the violin fitted with gut strings! Yes, these strings are made from sheep intestines. They give the violin a lovely, warm, crisp and agile sound, perfect for this Afro-American spiritual, “There’s A Meeting Here Tonight.” I’m playing abc singing the version transcribed in Charleston, South Carolina.
The African American spirituals of the Deep South are treasures of history and human triumph over tyranny and evil. “Slave Songs of the United States” was the first comprehensive anthology of these songs written down and compiled directly following emancipation.
