President Donald Trump's speech at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday drew mixed reactions from European leaders and US officials. Trump is also preparing to release new details on his 'Board of Peace' which has already created divisions among US allies.
California's Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom called Trump's speech 'remarkably boring'.
Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch of Sweden said she heard "a mix of irrational and rational arguments at the same time" from Trump, but said his recent statements about trying to take Greenland from Denmark caused concern in Europe.
"I think this just proves to show our message from Sweden to Europe is Europe needs to toughen up. We need to hold the line," she said.
Trump insisted on Wednesday that he wants to “get Greenland, including right, title and ownership,” but said he would not use force to do so.
NATO leader Mark Rutte said he tells the organization’s members that Trump is “completely committed” but has “one irritant” that Europeans were not paying the same amount for their defense as the U.S. was.
"You can be assured, absolutely, if ever U.S. will be under attack, your allies will be with you," Rutte told Trump.
After a reporter asked Trump about Danish leaders' rejection of his desire to acquire Greenland, the U.S. president said “I don't like getting it secondhand.”
