This is Episode 2 of the Raytheon Lewiston, ME series and will cover Raytheon's early history as a company whose early success in radar technology helped the British and U.S. military gain a significant advantage over its enemies with aircraft and ship radar technology. The company's interest in technology would expand into early transistor manufacturing that would position Raytheon as one of the leading germanium transistor manufacturers in the country by the mid-1950s. That interest in transistors would result in building one of the most modern transistor manufacturing facilities in the country in 1961. By 1962, transistor and semiconductor technology would progress quickly with Raytheon losing some of its competitive edge in the industry. These developments would play a significant role in Raytheon's departure from Lewiston in 1963, and its relocation of its entire semiconductor division to Mountain View, California--one of the communities that would make up the area that would be recognized as "Silicon Valley" beginning in 1971.
