Cycling of key nutrients (C, N, P, S) in soils is mediated by the extracellular enzymes in soils that catalyze mineralization. Traditionally used to monitor soil nutrient cycling response to management practices and pollution, soil enzyme activities are being considered by federal government (NRCS) and private sector entities as a soil health indicator. An overview of the principles of soil enzymes, current and recommended methods of soil enzyme assays, and interpretation of soil enzyme data will be reviewed. Presentation by Dr. Andrew Margenot and Brookside Laboratories, Inc.
