(Affiliate) Japoteurs (1942) is the tenth of seventeen animated Technicolor short films featuring the DC Comics character Superman, originally created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Japoteurs, the first Superman cartoon produced by Famous Studios (the successor to Fleischer Studios), follows Superman as he thwarts Japanese spies attempting to hijack a bomber plane and bring it to Tokyo. This cartoon does not have the Famous Studios name because the company was not yet fully organized after Max Fleischer's removal by Paramount Pictures from the studio that bore his name. The film was originally released in theaters by Paramount Pictures on September 18, 1942. Japoteurs was the first Famous Studios cartoon filmed in color.
The term "Japoteur" is a combination of the words "Japanese" and "saboteur."
Plot:
The story begins with a man reading the Daily Planet's front-page headline, "World's Largest Bombing Plane Finally Completed." The reader is Japanese, and upon finishing the article, he gazes at a picture of the Statue of Liberty in his office before pressing a button on his desk, which changes the image to the Japanese flag. He bows to the flag and extinguishes his cigarette on the news headline. Later, the Japanese man and his accomplices knock out a guard as the plane is prepared for a test run. Clark Kent and Lois Lane are touring the new bomber for the Daily Planet. When everyone is asked to disembark, Lois remains on board, hiding in a locker.
The plane takes off with additional stowaways—Japanese men hidden inside fake bombs. The spies restrain the pilots and take control of the plane. Meanwhile, Lois comes out of hiding and heads to the cockpit. Upon noticing the hijackers, she sneaks into the room, sends out a distress call on the radio, but is caught. Fighter planes are dispatched in response to her plea for help, but the hijackers drop a bomb that prevents the fighters from taking off. Clark Kent changes into Superman in an elevator.
Superman boards the plane to confront the hijackers, but one of them has Lois tied up and ready to be thrown out of the plane. Superman leaps out of the aircraft and reenters through the bomb hatch to rescue Lois. After freeing her, he fights the hijackers. One of them damages the plane's controls, causing it to plummet toward the city. Superman carries Lois to safety on the ground and then flies back up to catch the plane, landing it safely in the street.
Influences:
The cartoon's style, especially its portrayal of stereotypical Japanese characters, reflects American propaganda during World War II. Many contemporary cartoons followed a similar approach, such as the Schlesinger/Warner Bros. cartoons Scrap Happy Daffy (1943), Daffy - The Commando (1943), and Herr Meets Hare (1945), which often depict Japanese and German characters negatively while the American hero easily defeats them.
The plane-catching scene at the end bears a striking resemblance to a sequence in Superman Returns (2006) where Superman (played by Brandon Routh) prevents a plane from crashing into a baseball stadium by pushing his weight into the nose and carefully lowering it onto the field.
The pilot episode of the Arrowverse's Supergirl also pays homage to this scene, with Kara saving a plane carrying her sister by landing it on a river after one of its engines catches fire.
