1. This is a 3-day weekend backpacking trip in the Desolation Wilderness in the Sierra Mountains. A wilderness permit is required for both day hikes and overnight trips, and can be obtained from any U.S. Forest Service office. Our route starts at Echo Lake, following the trail along the rim and continuing on to Lake of the Woods. The hike is about 5.5 miles with roughly 1,500 feet of elevation gain. That said, some of us decided to take the water taxi across Echo Lake, which cuts the hike by up to 3 miles or 1.5 hr of hiking—but the total elevation gain remains the same. The boat ride costs $22 per person. Carrying a 45-pound pack makes the climb challenging, and let’s be honest—our bodies aren’t as young as they used to be, so a little shortcut sounded pretty good!
Echo Lake is about 12 miles west of South Lake Tahoe.
