To all appearances, Ibraheem Sarhan is just another teenager starting the school year in Winnipeg, Manitoba. But listen to him talk for a little while, and you’ll quickly realize that his presence in Canada is part of an extraordinary story of survival and resilience — beginning during wartime in Syria, and continuing to this day.
Ibraheem tells that story in “We Became Fragments,” the new Op-Doc directed by Luisa Conlon, Hanna Miller and Lacy Jane Roberts. The directors won the student prize in last year’s pitch competition for Op-Docs on international stories, supported by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and Tribeca Film Institute’s IF/Then Initiative.
Accompanied by a short written reflection by Samantha Power, the former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, the film uses Ibraheem’s own writings to explore the experience of trauma, loss and displacement — and the limits, possibly, of healing.
