Research Aims
Radiotherapy plays a crucial role in the treatment of cancer by delivering maximum dose to the tumour and minimising the radiation damage to healthy tissue. One of the significant challenges of treatment in thoracic malignancies such as left breast cancer and lung cancer is due to respiratory movement potential damage to the surrounding healthy tissues, especially to the heart and lungs[1]. The deep inspiration breath-holding (DIBH) technique offers valuable results in thoracic malignancies by reducing radiation exposure of organs at risk(OAR) and minimising cardiac long-term complications. [2][3].
DIBH is a technique that partially separates OAR by lung inflation[4]. During DIBH, the volume of the lung increases and holds on a specific position to reduce the radiation exposure to OAR during the radiotherapy and also immobilize the tumour leading to higher precision outcome. Clinically there are several DIBH techniques available, such as Active Breathing Technique(ABC), Voluntary Breath-hold technique, Surface guided radiation technique(SGRT) and gating technique etc.
The research aim is to evaluate and analyse the LADC dose received by patients undergoing left-breast cancer radiotherapy with the DIBH technique and determine the ideal dose tolerance for LADC. Also, the study seeks to address critical questions regarding LADC dose. Especially whether LADC dose does matter or should LADC be considered as an OAR in left breast cancer patients. This study aims to determine the LADC ideal dose tolerance to minimize cardiac toxicity in cancer survivors, and ultimately enhance patient length and quality of life.
