This may be performed on a typical Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Volvo, Western Star, Mack, and Navistar.
Power steering Poppet Trip Pressure Test also known as Relief Plunger testing. We must know what the pump's relief valve is set at before performing this test. While turning the steering full right and full left, we note the pressure reading on the gauge. If the poppet valves or the relief plungers are set correctly the pressure gauge should read at least 400 psi below the pumps relief valve setting. On this Mack tractor the pump relief valve is set at 2100 psi. Therefore when turning and holding the steering full left and full right our gauge should read 1700 psi or less, and in this test, it is.
