Jimmy Iovine took Joshua Ledet contemporary, but he throws Jessica Sanchez an old-school curveball, the Jackson 5's I'll Be There. "I love this song!" she exclaims.
He wanted a record that appealed to the older audience but still showed how young she is. If it was good enough for Berry Gordy and Michael Jackson, it's good enough for Jimmy and Jessica, he figures.
It could be a very smart choice. It's much easier to sing than the Mariah song, and it'll connect with the audience on both a musical and nostalgic level. It also has the added advantage of showing the wide range in Jessica's voice. She's got some punch in the lower register, and her jumps into the higher parts sound sweet.
"Perfect song, perfect voice, you nailed it, delicious," Steven says.
"It was perfect tone in your voice," Jennifer tells her. "You almost sounded like Michael."
Randy liked it but didn't love it. Here's why: "Once again, we're at the end here, and you're on the stage with all these other dynamic singers. There was never a moment moment."
"Can't I have an opinion?" he asks the booing audience. "NO!" they shout back.
